A flag design of fruit to celebrate Memorial Day or July 4th or Labor Day — yes, please! Berries are popular at any gathering — almost anyone on any diet can eat them. Serve this patriotic fruit tray with my simple spiced yogurt dip for a refreshing and healthy treat.
In the red-white-and-blue, the strawberries and raspberries for the red and blueberries for the blue are classy and simple. Plus, all those antioxidants, oh my!
The white is a little more challenging. Apples or bananas would be close to white, though would need dipping in lemon juice to keep them from turning brown.
Since I was pressed for time and couldn’t be sure how long after I prepared it that the fruit would be eaten, I went for easy in the white category: yogurt pretzels. OF COURSE this immediately kept this platter from being gluten-or-dairy free! This is the only “glutenous” item in my recipes posted here!
I took this to a pre-holiday party, curious to see: would the fruit go first? Or would more people go for the sweet pretzels (a bit sweet for my taste these days)? The fruit won! Several pretzels left over; all fruit gone. Yay, fruit team!
I did have one surprise, though: quite a few people dipped their pretzels into the yogurt dip.
A note about the spiced yogurt dip
The spiced yogurt dip will be as thick as the yogurt you use to prepare it. For non-dairy, I recommend CoYo (coconut) or Kite Hill (almond). Here I used kefir, which is a bit thinner than yogurt, because it’s what I have on hand most often. It clings nicely, but not too thickly, to the fruits.
You can also change the amount of honey you stir in. If your yogurt is quite mild, start with less.
Sprinkling cinnamon on top of the dip makes it look a bit like a latte! You can add other spices, of course: ginger and nutmeg are great too.

Ready to step into a spice adventure? We typically (– think Costco–) can get Cassia cinnamon easily … but the Ceylon canela cinnamon is a taste treat. Not so much more expensive, but more aromatic and flavorful. See below.

- 2 cups blueberries for the blue star
- 1 cup raspberries for the red stripes
- 2 cups strawberries for the red stripes
- 2 cups yogurt-covered pretzels, sliced bananas or apples, for the white stripes
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt or kefir
- 1 teaspoon honey or agave syrup, to taste
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon, divided
- Mint leaves for garnish, optional
- lemon juice, to coat apple or banana slices, optional
- Place the honey or agave syrup into a small bowl.
- Slowly add the yogurt or kefir, only adding more once the honey or agave is mixed in. The colder the yogurt or kefir, the more you will need to stir to mix the honey.
- Add just over half the cinnamon to the honey-yogurt mixture. Stir.
- Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon on top. Garnish with a small sprig of mint.
Recommended non-dairy yogurts: CoYo (coconut) and Kite Hill (almond)
To keep bananas or apples from browning, sprinkle lemon juice over the cut pieces and stir gently arranging them on the tray.
